Carol Louise Shaffer (Anthony) 58 years of Geneva passed away on April 29TH at the Cleveland Clinic. She is preceded in death by her mother, Arvina E. Anthony (Geneva), sister, Barbara A. Nelson (Anthony), and great-niece, Oliviah Brown-Hall. She is survived by her husband, Greg A. Shaffer (Geneva) and her siblings: Daniel L. Anthony (Conneaut), Patricia M. Brown (Ashtabula), Sandra Anthony-Iosue (Franklin, NJ), and Ralph W. Anthony III (Garner, NC) as well as by many nephews and nieces who loved their aunt very much. Carol battled double-pneumonia for many weeks before Greg gently held her hand as she made her journey to be with her mom whom she missed greatly.
Carol had the great fortune of meeting Greg, the love of her life, and marrying him in 2009. They spent much of their time creating lovely gardens and implementing their landscaping ideas. Together, Carol and Greg tried to help others and make a difference in someone else’s life. They often opened their home to anyone needing a bed and spent many hours listening to a family member’s or friend’s concern and would offer everything she could to either help that person or to give them something she thought would make them feel loved.
Carol and Greg had many plans they were looking forward to sharing together this summer. They planned to go fishing and Carol was excited that Greg was going to teach her how to play golf. Also, they were especially looking forward to traveling which is something they hoped to do more often in the future.
Carol’s strong sense of family caring was evident in many ways. She created a place where her siblings and their families could come and enjoy a campfire or a gathering in the family’s childhood home. She collected pictures of her extended family to hang on the walls to surround our mother with love when she was bedridden. She meticulously scanned all the family’s childhood pictures so that we could all enjoy them. She and Mom created loving video messages we could cherish after mom’s passing. She crocheted blankets for family member’s special occasions. She welcomed her nephews and nieces into her home for sleepovers with their aunt who protected them as if they were her own children. Many of them have commented that she was more like a second mom than an aunt.
She enjoyed watching movies, baking bread, or dancing with them. Carol’s happiest times were the moments she shared with Greg and with her entire family. We are going to miss her sweet gentle soul and the love she gave to us all.
There will be a private family visitation from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, May 9, 2020 at The Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St. Madison, OH 44057. While the family is gathered at the funeral home, friends are welcome to drive through the parking lot to sign the register book and receive a flower in Carol’s memory.
