Obituary for Dorothy L. Mavko
October 12, 1924—November 17, 2018
Dorothy Mavko, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family at Tidewell Hospice in Ellenton, Florida. She spent the majority of her life as a Midwesterner in Ohio. Raised in Unionville, Dorothy was the youngest of 11 children. As a spirited student, she led the Geneva High School band as head drum majorette and later attended Ohio University.
Dorothy married Jacob F. Mavko in 1948 and raised three children, Susan, Jake, and Mary Kim in Madison, OH. She was widowed in 1982 but remained in her home in Columbus, OH, until 2013 when she moved to San Francisco and later to Florida to be closer to family.
Dorothy showcased her flair for fashion as the owner of “Young at Heart,” a dress salon in Madison, OH, and later as a wedding consultant. Dorothy traveled extensively and greatly enjoyed her proofreading career at Diocesan Publications in Dublin, OH. Her long-time Columbus neighbors and friends will remember Dorothy as a friendly, hard-working, strong-willed woman with a great sense of humor.
In addition to her three children, Dorothy is survived by eight grandchildren—Danny, Lisa, Jennifer, Sarah, J. Paul, Madeline, Jacob and Taylor—with whom she was very close; five great grandchildren, Drew, Bree, Dylan, Landon and Hailey; daughter-in law Arlene; and sons–in law Dan Stump and Barry Schneider. They will remember Dorothy for her passion for cooking, her preparation of countless delicious family meals, and her artistic creativity. She made wonderful handicrafts, especially salt dough Christmas ornaments, was an avid reader, and also enjoyed gardening, oil painting, and playing blackjack. Her generous and loving spirit, mid-western values, and physical fortitude will live on in all our hearts and be remembered always.
A Catholic memorial mass will take place 2:00 pm on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Church, Madison, OH, with a one hour visitation prior to the service. Final Resting Place is North Madison Cemetery. For more information, please contact Behm Family Funeral Home of Madison.
