Henderica M. Greenways (Henny, or “Lady”) passed away in Bothell, Washington on Wednesday afternoon, December 9, 2009. She was 85 years old. She had been in hospice care for 2 months.

Henny was born in 1924 in The Hague, Netherlands.

She had a sister, Adri Hospes-Bouman, who preceded her in death. Her parents, Johannes Gerhard and Adri Pieternella Bouman were also deceased.

She completed secretarial school in Holland and during her teen years lived in a boarding house with her family in The Hague which was occupied by Nazi Germany. After liberation by the Allies she went to work as a Secretary for the Dutch Navy. Her job was to contact the families of slain Dutch sailors. In 1948, she visited a family in Cleveland as part of a program to help Europeans.

She met her husband, Jack (nee Jaap) in Paris in 1950. They married a year later and made plans to immigrate to the United States where they hoped for more opportunity.

She became a mother to Joyce and then moved to Madison, Ohio to join her husband who had come earlier to prepare for their arrival.

She worked as a secretary, then for Sears as head of their Housewares Department in Painesville, then joined her husband in running “Greenways Printing”, a landmark in Madison, which they owned for almost 50 years.

She enjoyed visiting her daughter in California and travelling to Holland to visit her relatives. Whenever she went back to Holland, the phones were ringing off the hook from all her well-wishers. She loved having long Koffee Klatches with her old friends and relatives and they loved visiting with her. There was always a lot of laughter when Henny was in the room.

She had opinions on everything and enjoyed the local news. She was also a fan of Lawrence Welk, Grand Ole Opry and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. She liked mental challenges.

She is survived by her daughter, Joy (Thomas) Frew in Washington State. Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death in 2003.

She will be interred at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Behm Family Funeral Home of Madison.
